Finishing the Jinotega Church

On their last trip, Greg and Lois Munz (Prince of Peace Lutheran, Burlington, Ontario) and Pete Juhlke (Christ Lutheran, St. Catharines, Ontario) were able to arrange to have the floor finished in the new church in Jinotega, Matagalpa Province, Nicaragua. Here are some pictures of the results.

Thanks to all of you who made this possible from your brothers and sisters in faith in Jinotega!

Update from Pastor Hamp and Holy Cross group

Pastor Warren Hamp of Faith, Kitchener, Ontario, who has been involved in teaching and  leading mission trips to Nicaragua for a number of years, updated the Nicaragua Coordinationg Committee on the microbanking project:

The micro-finance plan is working well.  Ten thousand dollars in loans have gone out, and lots of little businesses have begun.  Hopefully, as the money is paid back, more loans can go out. Also, we are starting a ‘Nicaragua Health Plan’ Fund, from which church workers there can borrow – interest free – when they have medical or dental needs.  The idea is to soften the blow when emergencies arise, as they often do.  We are aiming for $5000 to start out, but more may be needed.  Again, it will be something that ‘recycles’ itself as money is paid back, and thus can be used over and over.  I think we will be able to send in around $1000 from Faith at the end of the month to get it started.”

These micro-finance and health fund projects are especially critical for churchworkers and their families in Nicaragua because of the extreme poverty there. The government does not have the money to provide good inexpensive universal health care, and the Nicaraguan Lutheran congregations are too poor to provide a living wage for their pastors and deacons, much less cover their health costs. If you are interested in finding out more about these micro-finance projects, and particularly if you would like to contribute something toward them, I’m certain Pastor Hamp would love to hear from you. He can be contacted at revhamp (at) bellnet.ca. Contributions can also be made directly to Lutheran Church-Canada; just label it “Nicaragua Health Fund”.
